Born in New York to Greek immigrants, George Maharis studied acting and commenced in television in 1953. His most memorable role was as Buz Murdock in the TV series Route 66. In 1962 he became a recording artist for Epic records and revived the songs After the Lights Go Down Low, Teach Me Tonight and (Get Your Kicks On) Route 66. In 1963 he recorded the Ray Allen and Wandra Merrell composition That's How It Goes.
